What the EU Battery Passport requires

The EU Battery Passport becomes mandatory on 18 February 2027. From that date, each EV battery, LMT battery (light means of transport) and industrial battery with a rated capacity strictly greater than 2 kWh placed on the EU market must carry a digital battery passport — a record reachable through a QR code on the battery, holding a unique identifier plus data on chemistry, carbon footprint, recycled content, state of health, due diligence and dismantling (Reg. (EU) 2023/1542, Art. 77; Annex XIII). Some fields are public; others are restricted to authorities and persons with a legitimate interest. Portable and SLI starter batteries are excluded, and the obligation sits with the operator placing the battery on the market — the EU manufacturer, the importer or the authorised representative — never a distributor.

When does the EU Battery Passport become mandatory?
18 February 2027. From that date, EV batteries, LMT batteries and industrial batteries with a rated capacity greater than 2 kWh placed on the EU market must carry a digital battery passport (Reg. (EU) 2023/1542, Art. 77).
Which batteries need a passport?
Only EV, LMT (light means of transport) and industrial batteries strictly above 2 kWh. Portable batteries and SLI (starter, lighting, ignition) batteries are outside the Art. 77 passport scope.
Is the 2 kWh threshold inclusive?
No. The threshold is strictly greater than 2 kWh, so a 2 000 Wh industrial battery is out of scope and a 2 001 Wh one is in scope. Use the rated (not nominal) capacity measured at pack level.
Who holds the battery-passport obligation?
The economic operator placing the battery on the EU market — the EU-established manufacturer, the importer, or the authorised representative. A distributor does not author the passport; it only verifies one exists and cooperates with authorities (Art. 42).
What happens if the manufacturer is outside the EU?
A non-EU manufacturer must route the obligation through an EU-established importer or an authorised representative, who then holds the passport obligation. The tool flags this case explicitly.
Are batteries already on the market before the deadline affected?
No. A battery placed on the EU market before 18 February 2027 is grandfathered and does not retroactively require a passport.
How many Annex XIII data fields will I need?
It depends on the category. This tool inventories a representative set of Annex XIII fields and returns a category-gated count (for example 27 fields for EV, 28 for industrial, 20 for LMT), split into public and restricted tiers per Art. 77(2).
